Hiring Salespeople Comes With Risks: Are You Prepared?

Putting together a productive and successful sales team is not easy. Hiring salespeople who have the sales experience and product knowledge necessary to market your product can be a time-consuming task. There are so many variables and personalities to consider.
The growth of your company depends on the quality and integrity of your sales staff. The traits you should look for when hiring salespeople are the ability to establish relationships, openness to change and risk, persistence and reliability. It’s all about finding the right person for the job.
Yet it can be difficult to find the ideal person. If you have a young and growing business, you may not feel comfortable spending your limited funds or you may not want to give up control. If you have an established business, you may worry about a new person’s ability to fit in with other salespeople or to represent your products and services.
There’s also the cost of hiring salespeople. To recruit experienced salespeople, you may need to offer a base salary. All salespeople will need some form of training to introduce them to your business, products and services. There are also the lost sales while the salesperson gets up to speed and other people within the business spend time training the new person.
It may take months or maybe even a year before you can make a determination of whether or not the salesperson will work out. In the meantime, you risk losing customers and market share, may fail to meet sales goals and projections, may waste time training and coaching, and may damage relationships within your sales staff.
One way to avoid many of the pitfalls associated with hiring salespeople is to consider outsourcing your sales staff needs. Not only does outsourcing your sales force needs give you a competitive advantage, you’ll also save money. Sales force outsourcing provides you with a sales team that has the experience to build sales strategies and find new markets for your products and services. You will also have access to the newest sales methods and tools.
